Why was Jesus born?

Preacher: 李業基牧師 Rev. Gideon Lee
Passage: Gal. 4:1-7
Service Type: 网上英语

The heir is no different from a slave when he is a child.

I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no different from a slave, though he is the owner of everything, but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by his father. In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world. (1-3)

  1. The underage heir is under guardianship.
  2. The Roman concept of Paedagogi were often slaves.
  3. Elementary principles of the world may include to religious traditions, law, philosophy, empirical knowledge, practical wisdom, etc.

The son of God became a man so that men might become sons of God.

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. (4-5)1. God sent forth his Son: Jesus is fully divine.
2. Born of woman: Jesus is fully human.
3. Born under the law: Jesus carries the moral burden all human beings carry.
4. To redeem those who were under the law: Jesus paid for the sins of all with his life.
5. So that we might receive adoption as sons: Sinners have possibility to become sons of God again.

We are no longer a slave but an heir!

And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.1. God has sent the Spirit of his Sin into our hearts: Being born-again is an active work of God.
2. Crying Abba, Father: sign of born-again: faith in God, instinctively turned to God for help
3. An heir of all creation: know what you own and know why you own it!
